Branding Yourself around the Male Double-standard

Before the first Presidential debates this year, I was talking with one of my friends about the “Hillary Problem.” No, I don’t mean the e-mails. I could care less about that by now. I mean that, during the debates, she can’t be very aggressive. If she is, she might be deemed “abrasive” — this happens to women a lot on performance reviews — whereas if Trump is aggressive, he will probably get hours and hours of media coverage out of it (see my post on Personal Branding and Donald Trump)

It’s the double standard that women have long-faced in the working world and beyond. I can’t stop that double standard from happening in a simple blog post, but I can help you with one aspect of it — how to brand yourself better to get ahead.

Being a female entrepreneur is hard for a couple of major reasons:

  • Most companies are still run by men
  • Those men may have preconceived notions about who you are and what you represent
  • You’re often judged on your looks before your ideas

Now look, you can’t always win at this game. It’s hard. That’s the reason why there are more Fortune 500 CEOs named “John” than women in total. But what it does mean is that if you’re a female entrepreneur and you’re serious about being out in your industry and market, there are a few things you need to master.

Off the top of my head:

  • Headshot
  • Body shot
  • LinkedIn profile needs to be masterful
  • Lead introduction video
  • Talking point videos
  • A consistent blog with value-add to your audience
  • A real conversational Twitter
  • An organically-built e-mail list where you’re not always selling
  • Ongoing media appearances
  • Speeches
  • Getting mentioned/buzzed about by others in social

That’s a long list, right? You still have to run your business day-to-day too. (And we haven’t even gotten to your family, which is really the No. 1 priority.)

How do you figure out all this stuff as you build your business?

Well, one of the cardinal rules of business since probably the Ice Age has been: “Do what you’re good at, and outsource the rest.” If you think you’re great at all the above, go do it. But if you want to focus on building the business and you want someone else to focus on the aspects of building the brand, then outsource that part.
